Interoperability Solutions
SunyaEK designs and implements Health Information Exchange (HIE) architectures that allow patient and program data to move securely between EMRs, mHealth platforms, laboratories, pharmacies, and national reporting systems. Our work is grounded in the OpenHIE framework and aligned with international standards such as HL7 FHIR, ICD, LOINC, and SNOMED CT.
What we deliver
- Health Information Exchange architecture design and rollout
- Health Information Mediators (HIM) and Shared Health Records
- FHIR-based standards development, profiling, and implementation guides
- EMR ↔ DHIS2 ↔ mHealth integrations
- Master Patient Index (MPI) and Master Facility List (MFL)
- National data dictionaries, terminology services, and code mapping
- Interoperability governance, guidelines, and sustainability planning
Platforms we work with
OpenHIM, OpenHIE, Bahmni, OpenMRS, NepalEHR, DHIS2, Community Health Toolkit (CHT), CommCare, REDCap.
Digital Health Academy
The SunyaEK Digital Health Academy is our learning platform for clinicians, public-health professionals, statisticians, developers, and decision-makers. Through structured courses, fellowships, hands-on labs, and certification programs, we build the practical skills needed to design, implement, and govern digital health solutions in Nepal and similar settings.
What we offer
- Foundations of Digital Health and Health Informatics
- Standards & Interoperability (FHIR, OpenHIE, ICD, LOINC, SNOMED CT)
- EMR/EHR implementation with Bahmni, OpenMRS, and NepalEHR
- DHIS2 for analysts, implementers, and program managers
- mHealth using the Community Health Toolkit (CHT) and CommCare
- AI and Machine Learning for Health Data
- Health data governance, privacy, and cybersecurity
- Research methods and implementation science for digital health
Formats
In-person bootcamps in Kathmandu, blended programs with universities, on-site institutional trainings, and online courses for regional and global learners. We also run a Training-of-Trainers (ToT) track to grow long-term in-country expertise.
AI Solutions
SunyaEK develops AI tools that turn routine health data into early warnings, decision support, and operational efficiency. Our work is designed for low-resource and frontline settings, where simple, explainable, and locally validated models often deliver more impact than complex black boxes.
Where we apply AI
- Predictive models for disease risk, outbreak detection, and patient deterioration
- Natural language processing for clinical notes, registries, and Nepali-language health content
- Computer vision for diagnostic support and image triage
- Conversational AI and chatbots for Community Health Workers and patients
- AI-assisted data quality, deduplication, and anomaly detection in DHIS2 and EMR data
- Decision-support dashboards layered on top of HIE data
Every solution is built with attention to privacy, fairness, explainability, and alignment with WHO and national guidance on AI for health.
Digital Health Capacity Building
Technology only delivers impact when the institutions around it are ready to use, govern, and sustain it. SunyaEK works alongside government agencies, hospitals, NGOs, and academic partners to grow long-term digital health capacity - from national policy down to the point of care.
Our services include
- Digital health strategy, roadmap, and investment planning
- Technical assistance to MoHP, DoHS, and provincial health authorities
- Workforce development for ICT officers, statisticians, and clinical staff
- Governance and policy advisory: data protection, EHR standards, AI ethics
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and implementation playbooks
- Mentorship and on-the-job support during system rollouts
- Cybersecurity readiness, IT policy development, VAPT, and SOC implementation
We measure success not by what we deliver, but by what our partners can sustain after we step back.
Research
SunyaEK conducts and supports applied research that strengthens the evidence base for digital health in Nepal and similar low- and middle-income settings. We collaborate with universities, research institutes, government bodies, and global partners to translate findings into policy, practice, and product.
Our research focus
- Implementation research on EMR, HIE, and mHealth deployments
- Health data quality, completeness, and use studies
- AI evaluation: clinical validation, fairness, and real-world performance
- Cost-effectiveness and sustainability of digital health interventions
- Digital health workforce and capacity studies
- Public health informatics, disease surveillance, and epidemiology
- Operational research using routine DHIS2 and EMR datasets
We publish in peer-reviewed journals, contribute to global open-source communities, and host research fellowships for graduate students and early-career investigators.
